The aspectual system is a part of the semantic system, which in turn is a part of the linguistic system. My idea is that the linguistic system has many strata of recognition, such as phonological / phonetic level, word level, grammar level, superficial meaning level and cultural understanding level. My ultimate goal is to help language learners acquire non-native languages by clarifying how human recognition of non-native languages takes place and the universal language acquisition process.
The goal of this article is to find out what the aspectual systems of Japanese and English are composed of as well as similarities and differences between them by comparing Japanese and English sentences. Native Japanese speakers possess both the explicit and the implicit understanding of the aspectual system of Japanese. I believe it is much better to employ the understanding of their native language and expand it into their target language rather than to just infuse them with knowledge about their target language.
I have analyzed aspectual expressions which occur in English and Japanese using Vendler’s verb categorization and Leech’s view on progressive aspect and Imaizumi’s view of Japanese aspectual phases and the category of the meaning of teiru that Chen has suggested.
The result is that this categorization is effective in understanding and explaining about aspectual expressions.
