it has been more than 70 years after the death of the author of Popeye, for this reason, the Italian Master of Comics, Pier Luigi Sangalli, has decided to submit new stories of our hero in digital format, inspired by the stories published in Italy during the period of his past work.
This project with New Popeye or as I call it "PopeyeBook" or "Pop-i-Book!" is a special editorial experiment, the continuation of the publications depends on thousands of interconnected factors; the spirit of this enterprise is mainly to make happy readers and fans of the character Popeye.
The laws on copyright are still under discussion in various countries and nobody knows for sure which way to go worldwide to publish a comic book by an author after a certain number of years after his death.
In this specific case, Pier Luigi Sangalli has designed and wrote these stories in Italy, and is also the only legitimate owner of the original drawings.
Since, in the opinion of the writer, these drawings are comparable to works of art, we can consider this publication as the catalog of a series of works of art which by the way are very popular among hobbysts and investors in the art.
The alternative would have been to wait for the definition of copyright in all countries of the world, but in that case we would have deprived millions of children and adults of the chance to be happy by reading the stories of this character that has given happiness to at least five generations of people.
I am very attentive and open-minded to all advice and suggestions, in addition to professionalism and ethics, I will be ready to provide all the necessary arrangements in order to ensure the readers of the publication of the stories of Popeye.
To summarize in one sentence my thought, as I learned from a prominent lawyer expert in international law: "The international law recognizes the resourcefulness of honest people".
The original comics are in Italian language, in fact you will find both published versions, for this reason I tried to do my best to translate in the best way the particular expressions of the characters (i.e. when Popeye says: "Blow me down!").
With humility I'd ask to our readers to give me a feedback about the dialogues, if everything is correct and in line with the language that is routinely used in the comics and in particular in those old Popeye-style.
My ideal would be to publish a perfect digital comic book, for all its aspects: graphics, dialogues, readability on digital readers both color and black and white.
