The Insidious Lies of More (English Edition)

    Por Michael Reeves

    Sobre

“Our economy is based on spending billions to persuade people that happiness is buying things, and then insisting that the only way to have a viable economy is to make things for people to buy so they’ll have jobs and get enough money to buy things.” – Philip Elliot Slater

I had gotten on an emotional merry-go-round thinking I was headed somewhere. Everybody else seemed to be on the same merry-go-round, so it appeared I was in the right place. It was the path to prosperity and purpose. Each time I made a complete circuit, I found myself at the same starting point. It was rather ironic. I had more, but I still wanted more.
I thought that I must be doing something wrong, so I decided to push harder, go faster; I still ended up in the same emotional place. I was not experiencing a state of personal flourish, nor can I claim that I was thriving or feeling emotional good fortune. The American merry-go-round of abundance was simply spinning me in circles. I wasn’t actually getting anywhere, and I just ended up dizzy and frustrated.

Are you ready to get off the merry-go-round of More?
Are you ready for a simple more manageable life?
More is insidious because it drives you to a physical, emotion and spiritual place where all your resources are used up and you never feel gratified, no matter how much you have.

More has convinced you that the simple and basic things of life are not enough; you need more, a great deal more. The big money in capitalism is selling things people don’t need. This is a cycle that is very difficult to break, because the advertising machine is always creating new things we must have (or at least things we think we must have).

Don’t allow yourself to be turned into another cog in the wheel of materialism.
Michael has walked the path from complexity to simplicity. He put everything on the table; emotional, physical and spiritual, and only kept the things that added simplicity to his life. It wasn’t just about eliminating and de-cluttering his life (which he did), it was about creating a path to simplicity, by identifying the things in his life that were constantly causing complexity.
Enough is never enough if you have not learned to tame more in your life. More is never enough, but enough can be enough when you answer the ten questions in the chapter “Defining Enough”. “He who knows that enough is enough will always have enough.” –Lao Tzu

Why should you read this book? I believe that we can go back to a life of simplicity and contentment, a way of life that is graced with the genuine enjoyment for what we have. I believe we have the strength to reject a lifestyle in which we’re constantly haunted by—and hunting for—that which we don’t have.

Changing the world begins from within. Exposing the insidious lies of more is an important step to simplicity. This is a journey of exploring the beauty of simplicity and contentment in your individual Garden of Eden. You cannot depend upon your governments to solve this problem. The pursuit of simplicity has to become a social movement, where enthused and motivated people share their passion for a life free from more.

For at least a moment, open your eyes to the perspective of this social movement. Consider if you, too, will make the changes necessary to live a life of freedom and choice.
