Pablo Escobar – The Colombian Drug Lord (English Edition)

    Por Pete Bruce

    Sobre

In the early 70’s, with the ransom money as a starting capital, young Pablo enters the drug business. He spends his first years working for other drug traffickers. In 1975 one of the biggest drug lords in Medellin, Fabio Resterpo, is murdered. Although it was never proven, Escobar is thought to be behind this crime, because as soon as Resterpo was dead, all his men were told that they were now working for Pablo Escobar.

Pablo Escobar wasn’t afraid to do the dirty work that drug smuggling requires. His courage was legendary. Although a rising druglord, he had no problem in flying a plane full of coca paste for more than a couple of times, mostly between Panama and Co-lombia. Later on, when his wealth reached legendary proportions, he decommissioned the plane he used to fly in those early years and hung it over the gate of his famous hacienda for good luck.

His cocaine business had a very simple flow of goods: he imported high grade coca pasta from Bolivia and Peru, processed it into cocaine in Columbia, and transported it to the United States for distribution and sale. A shrewd businessman, Escobar made his trade grow very fast and he soon found himself in need of a greater workforce. That’s how the Medellin cartel appeared, an organisation which gathered all the suburb’s criminal groups.

The Medellin Cartel was the first drug cartel in history. There was a huge market to be conquered and controlled and Escobar seized the opportunity. His first import of coca paste totalled a mere 45$. In a couple of years, the pilot who flew a plane for the Medellin Cartel could receive cuts as high as $750.000 per flight, depending on the quantity of drugs or raw materials he smuggled in or out of the country.

Pablo Escobar’s fondness of underaged girls was no secret. Proof of this stands his marriage to Maria Victoria Henao Vellejo, who was only 15 at the time he proposed to her. For the marriage to go through, the young couple needed a special approval from the local bishop. He had two children with his wife: Juan Pablo and Manuela. Although they remained married until his death in 1993, Pablo Escobar had numerous love affairs, most of them with underage girls.

His most famous affair took place between 1983 and 1987. His mistress’ name was Virginia Vallejo, who later became a famous Columbian TV personality. She became the centre of a huge me-dia scandal when, on July 24 2006, Columbian television aired a video in which she accused a former senator of instigating Pablo Escobar in her presence to eliminate Luis Carlo Galan, who was running for president.

Her book “Loving Pablo, Hating Escobar” (Amando a Paul, odiando a Escobar) is a biography containing many details about the King of Cocaine at the peak of his activity that no other biographer could have had access to. She appeared as a key witness in sev-eral court actions against politicians, even against former Co-lombian presidents. Her testimonies were confirmed by the Truth Commission. Following her deposition, a high-ranking for-mer colonel and a former general were sentenced to thirty and thirty-five years in prison in connection with the Palace of Jus-tice Siege. She was eventually granted political asylum in the United States.

Pablo was a rather quiet fellow. He didn’t drink much, besides beer. He didn’t smoke cigarettes, although he was fond of the strong, Colombian bred cannabis. He continued to occasionally smoke cannabis until his death. His only real addictions were money and power.
