Giancarlo Baghetti was the son of a wealthy Milan businessman who first came to prominence as the driver of a FISA Dino Ferrari Formula 2 car. He became one of only three men to win the first significant race in his career with his triumph in the 1961 Reims Grand Prix. Dueling with the Porsche driven by Californian Dan Gurney in a last lap finish, the young Italian showed driving skill beyond his years. Unfortunately Giancarlo was caught up in the Ferrari defection to ATS in 1963. He began driving cars that qualified poorly and failed to finish any of the races they entered. After '63 Baghetti was reconciled to inferior equipment in his Formula One career. He did experience success driving touring cars at the Targa Florio and Mille Miglia races.
