Follow Oomi on her journey, as she leaves India after an arranged marriage, to a man she has not spoken to or seen before. Only sixteen years old, the feeling of being wrenched from family, community and a land that has nurtured her since birth is unbearable. Her month long journey is to South Africa. She brings up her family under the apartheid regime and learns about ‘indentured’ Indians who were sent to work on the sugar cane plantations.
Her story is a feast of food, festivals, families and journeys. It is peppered with medical dramas and lashings of history. After being widowed she follows her children to Australia. A new world opens up for her as she meets people of different ‘colour and culture’
