On her way to join her Godfather, Major John Villiers, Lottie Pettifer and her young charge Davie Compton are caught up in the surprise attack and savage taking of the city of Oporto by the French. Trapped on the north side of the Douro. with the British and Portuguese armies on the other bank, retreating south, Lottie and Davie face the daunting prospectof finding a way to cross the wild river and a journey south through war-torn Portugal in an attempt to find safety with the British.
On the way they are heartened when they finally find refuge in a small mountain monastery; only to discover that the place has a perilous and violent secret of its own. There is no escape, it seems, from the danger and the treachery of war.......
