Sands of the Cape Fear River: An American Civil War Novel (English Edition)

    Por Benjamin H. Garrison

    Sobre

William Wescott never intended to abandon his unit in hostile territory, but how was he to anticipate a ghost would pull him back to the woman who scorned him just prior to the Civil War?

Wounded and captured by Confederate units at Fort Fisher, North Carolina, William Wescott, a Federal soldier of North Carolina descent, is rescued and ferried into hostile Confederate-held Brunswick County by an intuitive slave named Apollo. Once safe, Apollo informs Will that the woman who rejected Will prior to the war, Katie Pridgen, is on the verge of death. Instead of returning to the Union army, Will elects to trek up the sands of the Cape Fear River in a desperate attempt to reach Katie’s side before she passes.

With divine intervention from Apollo's deceased spouse, Delphi, Will evades capture twice before finally being apprehended by civilians. However, Delphi has a plan: Will's jailer is none other than the man who houses the ailing Katie. With the Federal army behind him slowly pursuing the retreating Rebel units and with the bitter, broken Katie refusing to acknowledge his presence, Will wonders if the stakes are worth it.

He does not know the answer, but against all logic Will maintains faith and trust in a proud, yet eccentric, slave and a ghost that haunts them all, choosing to remain by the ailing Katie’s side as the world crumbles around them.
