Spring blossoms forth in the Escondido Canyon of the Llano Estacado of West Texas, spilling over with new life. Cowboys and ranchers Luke Stuart and Tom Schurtz look eagerly forward to the roundup to try to place some measure on the increase of the herd of the Seven Ox Seven ranch. Spring also brings a well-known stranger, Charles Goodnight, to the canyon with hopes that that neighbor will become a friend. And spring takes away those who must leave for respective reasons. One’s intended leaving has been known among the party, and it will take him out upon the trail through the JA ranch, the remains of the buffalo hunt, and the potential danger from Indians and outlaws and all the challenges of the trail, to Dodge City, Kansas, for supplies, a romantic reunion, and a surprise addition to the ranch. The other’s intended leaving has been known to that individual alone, and its revelation evokes surprise, strong emotion, and no little despondency in more than one member of the party.
