    During historic times the Romans called the place Curtincum. It was the homeland of a Gallo-Roman farmer named Curtinus. The lineage was known as Kurtenai and Cortenei in the older feudal arms. In England the surname became stablied as Courtenay and Courtney. This is the story of that heritage.

    Genetic factors and literary documents form the basis for this narrative. Genetically, haplogroup R1b1c, M 269 contains the DNA markers M 9, M 45, M 207, M 173, and M 343 that define the ancestry of the family clan by reaching back thousands of years into ancient generations. Marker 269 is the focus of the clan and its genesis, that includes its exodus out of Africa, the family’s subsequent migration to the Eurasian steppes, to Iberia as the Cro-Magnon inhabitants, and from there establishing themselves as renowned families in western Europe and England.

    This chronicle is an account of that proud and ancient family whose members were notable in the Great Crusades and, during the ensuring decades, were immediate to the French and English nobility. Later, in the mid-1600’s, this branch of this family migrated to the Virginia Colony. This is the story of their lineage as verified through chromosome test analysis and supported thru germane documentary evidence. In this endeavor a portrayal of the route of this small band is traced thru prehistory and into the modern time period.
