Hello, have me met? I used to be a bra size 36 HH-now I’m a 36 C. (Did you know that there’s also a HHH all the way up to a K?) I documented my breast reduction in December 2011 in a diary peppered with humorous drawings. Now it’s a little illustrated ebook titled,
downsize
[anatomy of a breast reduction]
I am a freelance writer living in Italy and have been published in ‘The Italy Daily’ section of The International Herald Tribune.
This is what you will find in my little ebook, by chapter:
introduction: two fried eggs
Covers the breasts in my family.
breasts: a history
Explores the role of breasts in social context, fashion and self-image and, the effect this had on me after premature menopause at 25 as my boobs kept growing over the next two decades.
italy
How I came to live in a country without bras to fit women in general and, ladies bigger than 40 D in particular.
anatomy of a breast reduction
After fifteen years of thinking about it, I plan the surgery exactly a year after my sister’s death as an act of moving forward!
life after downsizing
The upside and downside post-reduction.
epilogue
To what extent was my reduction motivated by current cultural expectations of what is considered attractive and beautiful in Western society? The answer is, a lot.
While it is true that there are several books on the topic, this is an essayist’s look at the procedure, meant for any girl who ever looked down and could not see her shoes. Think writer, living in a foreign country and carting around six pounds (and growing) on her chest. This title, a twist on the economic woes at the time, "downsize"' is all about a glorious transformation from more to less, positive and life-affirming, with fun illustrations and photographs.
Thank you for reading.
