Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) was the son of an Austrian customs official. As leader of the extreme nationalist and anti-Semitic Nazi Party he capitalised on post-war discontent in Germany and the world economic slump of the early 1930s to become German Chancellor in 1933. After crushing all internal opposition he established a one-party dictatorship and set out to redraw the borders of Europe to gain ‘living space’ for the German people in the east. His expansionist policies precipitated the Second World War, which brought untold destruction and genocide before culminating in defeat for Germany and suicide for her leader.
