I was absolutely convinced that if I could say exactly the right words, in exactly the right order, at exactly the right time, with exactly the right flappy hand gestures, I could make something amazing happen. Finally, the most amazing thing DID happen—my best friend got a magic kit for her birthday, and her magic kit included...a magic hat! Every Saturday, I’d take a hunk of sponge toffee to her house as a bribe so she’d let me borrow her magic hat. I’d hide in her closet behind the laundry hamper so that I wouldn’t be distracted, and I’d try one magical chant after another, trying to find something—anything—that would make fantastic things come out of that hat. I can only imagine what my friend’s mother must have thought each Saturday when she walked into that room and found her daughter gnawing away on sponge toffee while a strange little girl muttered and chanted in the closet. You’ve probably already guessed that I never found the right magic words—thankfully, in this story, Karine does!
