Written in 1662 by John Bunyan (1628-1688) when he was imprisoned in Bedford jail for preaching the Gospel, this little gem memorably defines prayer in a simple but comprehensive statement. Bunyan then goes on to show what it means to pray in the Spirit and with the understanding (1 Corinthians 14:15), emphasising each element in such a way as to challenge Christians in their approach to prayer whilst at the same time encouraging greater faith in the power of prayer. He wrote to show that prayer that slavishly follows the forms of the Book of Common Prayer is not real prayer, but such is the depth of this simple work that its counsels are still relevant today.
