Esse templo foi uma obra que levou dezenove anos para ser concluída, envolta em mistérios e conflitos paralelos de toda ordem. A demora na construção da igreja revela as dificuldades inerentes àquele momento histórico: falta de dinheiro, materiais e escravos; além de conflitos políticos e religiosos, como o enfrentamento de presidentes provinciais com os movimentos messiânicos do alto rio Negro e os embates entre a maçonaria e alguns representantes do clero.
