This small book is published in 2017. This year is the beginning of chaos and disorder, which have been brought to us by the presidential election in the USA. and the referendum in the United Kingdom to decide whether the UK should leave or remain in the EU. The world is becoming smaller and smaller not only in volume but also in character, as the formerly-first-rated nations abandoned the beliefs and principles that they themselves have created and cherished for a long time. The nations on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean will never be respected by the citizens of the rest of the world from this year on.
In this chaotic period, I do believe that nothing has been changed by the ugly statesman and the most important things in life cannot be altered by anyone or any nation. Now is the time we should return to the old world to search for the pieces of wisdom and wit. This book contains about 150 maxims quoted from the works by Dr. Samuel Johnson, the most distinguished man of letters in English history. I hope that this book will become a beacon light especially for the young people who face earnestly the hardships of work or study every day. Life is real and life is earnest.
In this work, these abbreviations of Samuel Johnson's works are used:
Rambler (with its issue number. The Rambler 1750-52),
Rasselas (with its chapter number. The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abyssinia 1759), and
Life (with its date. Boswell’s Life of Samuel Johnson 1791)
