Outside the tent, she froze.
She was unable to move. It was as if her heart had stopped; she felt numb from the inside out. The guard tried to push her forwards, but Lanada held up a hand and he stopped.
Aeda barely noticed.
Outside the tent was a wide plain, with low, rolling hills and tall, heavy grasses. The sun was low in the purple sky, and Aeda could see the dim outline of the moon on the horizon.
And on the plain there were people. Hundreds of people, organized in neat columns and rows, standing outside their tents and polishing their weapons. There were humans and elves, and strange, narrow, winged folk that Aeda didn’t recognize. There were fires everywhere, and Aeda could smell smoke and cooking meat.
But what caught her eyes were the dragons.
They were as big as carriages. They were brightly colored, tending towards shades of brown, green, and orange. They had wings tightly curled up into their bodies, and they had four legs ending in claws that glinted brightly, even in the setting sun.
“Oh Oinye save us,” Aeda whispered. “I thought they were gone.”
“And that,” Lanada said, “is why I am called the DragonQueen.”
