This small book was was written by Isamu Hayakawa and first published in 1993. Even now, this is useful and instructive to the students of contrastive linguistics and those who would like to graps the contrasting points of English and Japanese in a simple way.
AN ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to present a brief review of the research available on the contrastive analysis of English and Japanese and its application to the teaching of English in Japan.
The first step in the construction of the contrastive study is to define the relationship between language and culture. The second step is to construct a framework of the contrastive analysis of the two languages, in which important aspects of linguistic and cultural structures should be contrasted. Due to the great differences in language and culture, there exist various problems that Japanese students have to face in learning English. The last step is to apply the discoveries of rigorous studies to the practice of teaching English as a foreign language in Japan, so that future students may benefit.
