“War is cruelty” wrote General W T Sherman, a famous veteran of the American Civil War which began in April 1861.
For an 11 years-old farm boy, Argus Trumpp, the cruelty began two years before then, when he witnessed the brutal murder of his parents and the burning of his home at Smokey Hill in Kansas Territory. This atrocity was one of many which were committed by gangs of terrorists on farms and towns throughout the territory, for the purpose of forcing them to accept the pro-slavery doctrine practiced by the Southern States.
Rescued from this traumatic scene by a notorious gunfighter, Nathan Swift, young Argus, now bent on revenge, attached himself to Nathan, learning all the skills in the use of a rifle and six-gun. From then on, Argus was to become set on a relentless course of violence, death and betrayal, which took him through many years of deadly confrontation against his enemies, in his fight for survival.
Argus Trumpp became a Civil War hero before turning his skills to become a bank robber, ruthless killer and Indian fighter, finally turning his back on the West and all of its horrors, finding love and peace in a place where he never expected it.
