Leonardo returns to Florence to find a lavish workshop provided for him by Cesare Borgia. Leonardo knows Cesare has an ulterior motive and this generosity will come with a price to be paid but refusing could come with a far more dangerous price.
Famous Florentine artwork by Botticelli, Donatello, Uccelo and others are slashed and burned by vandals suspected to be followers of Savanarola known as "Mourners". Though Leonardo is disturbed by the vandalism, after his adventures in Milan and Mantua, he determines not to get involve.
Leonardo and Niccolo made a dangerous enemy of Isabella d'Este, Marquesa of Mantua when they implicated her in murder and the disappearance of a fabulous necklace. Now she has sent an assassin to exact her revenge. Cesare Borgia is called upon to remove the threat which puts Leonardo further in his debt.
But this is a mystery and Leonardo is our detective so using his powers of observation he uncovers the methods used in the destruction which calls into question who would benefit from this vandalism. He knows his investigation is making people nervous when he gets kidnapped and survives yet another assassination attempt. As the motive becomes clear he knows the proof will be found in Rome. He needs an invitation to Rome and access to the Medici Palazzo where he believes documents will verify his suspicions. Cesare agrees to the plan and offers assistance while Leonardo is in Rome. The debt is magnified.
With the successful conclusion of the investigation Leonardo makes a powerful enemy of the Medici and for his safety, Cesare facilitates his disappearance – the final debt.
The accumulated debt is paid in the next book, The Toys of War.
