'Trial and Tribulation’ is the third instalment in the Bergville series of tales.
The setting of British-occupied South Africa in 1890, between the first and second Anglo-Boer wars, sees the arrival of Miss Susannah Bertrand from Victorian-ruled England. Young, and still unacquainted with the often harsh ways of the world, she discovers the beauty of Africa from the standpoint of not always being the most welcomed. She joins her cousin Henry to establish a trading post called Bergville under the direction of the Queen’s Governor, and falls in love with more than just the place and its people. With adventures of avoiding Zulu attacks, coping with conditions that test every resolve, and learning to accept the conquered Boers as part of her new society, she becomes embroiled in the intrigues of murder, politics and war just as much as in love and desire.
