Cycling from Dakar to the Gambia in 2008 was the starting point for a series of adventures in this small but magical corner of West Africa.
The experience was so fascinating that the author returned to take up an invitation to stay with a family in a remote village beside the ocean, to discover what life is really like in an African compound. 'The Village On The Edge Of The World', the second in her 'Travels In West Africa' series, is the record of her faithful observations of daily life there.
Now she revisits the African family who 'adopted' her, but this time new territory beckons - up-river into the deep interior, on into scorching but friendly eastern Senegal and the wild mountains which border Guinea. 'Between The River And The Sea', the third book in the series, is the account of these adventures.
Combining bush-taxi public transport, a jeep and a scooter with her bike, she heads inland following the River Gambia, finding hospitality in remote hamlets and learning to communicate in local languages. Above all, she discovers - yet again - the warmth of the West African welcome.
