Randall Taylor and his friends are nerdy outcasts at their school that have a close bond with one another. Hanna Evans is a beautiful and popular girl that strikes up a friendship with Randall in their Science class. This does not sit well with Hanna’s athletic boyfriend, Jimmy and his friend, David who enjoys tormenting Randall and his friends. After Jimmy stands by and laughs while David bullies Randall and his good friend, Jacob, he falls out of favor with Hanna. Randall and Hanna find they have more in common than they originally thought and become closer. Jimmy decides to send Randall a message for stealing his girl by fighting with him outside the school.
When Randall and his friends try and defend themselves, they are caught by the principal and suspended; but Jimmy and David get off without a word of reprimand. Hanna decides to make a speech about this injustice during a pep rally, which garners sympathy for Randall and his friends. Her efforts garner support from students and faculty. This makes the administration change their mind; and they decide to suspend Jimmy and David. In the end, Hanna and Randall find there’s much more to their relationship than friendship. Hanna became one of the ‘outcasts’ and finds love in the process because she was able to look ‘beyond the barriers’ that lie between social groups.
