When Jesus was asked questions, he was very proficient in his ability to reference Scripture, as well as use illustrations to reach the hearts of his listeners. (Matt. 12:1-12) The apostle Paul made it an established custom to ‘reason with them from the Scriptures, explaining and proving’ what he taught them. (Acts 17:2-3) The apostle Peter said that we are all always to ‘be prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in us. (1 Pet 3:15) If we are to be effective, we must be able to do the same. If we are proficient in our use of the Bible, we too will be cable to carry out the Great Commission more effectively with our family, friends, coworkers, and in our community. Proficiency will help us to proclaim the Gospel, to teach the foundations of the faith, as well as expose false teachings.—2 Tim. 2:15
