Opening in the final days of the English Civil War, Mourning Cloak is a fictional account of the turbulent romance of King Charles I's ward, Lady Mary Villiers, and his cousin, the soldier-scholar Prince Rupert of the Rhine.
An intriguing "if only" of history: if Mary and Rupert had married, as one of his sisters predicted in a letter in the 1670s, their issue would have inherited the British throne instead of the Hanoverian dynasty. Both had children by others, and both were Protestant. Rupert's youngest sister, Sophia, missed becoming queen by only a few weeks.
