William Stewart Halsted is an American surgeon, born in New York on September 23, 1852 and died in September 7, 1922 (69 years) in Baltimore. He is best known as one of the pioneers of aseptic and surgical anesthesia and has developed a number of operative procedures, including radical mastectomy applied to breast cancer. William Osler, Howard Kelly, William Welch, Halsted was one of the "Big Four", founding doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
