Carola

A very telling, slightly religious book about a young woman's coming of age. She wanders the streets at night to find gin to let her ailing, dying grandmother to drink, and befalls many hardships of her own. This tale brought tears to the eyes of one of our editors. It's one of those very strange, happy / sad novels that come around once in a while. The action takes place in 19th Century London.
