J. C. Ryle (1816-1900) was the first Bishop of Liverpool and a renowned evangelical in the Church of England. Many of his works continue in print and this series of sketches of the lives and ministries of eleven English Christian leaders from the period of the Great Awakening in the eighteenth century is among his best. This readable introduction to men such as George Whitefield, John Wesley, William Romaine and others is essential reading for all Christians. That faithful preaching of the message of the Bible can accomplish so much is a concept largely lost today; the incessant labours and concern for souls exemplified in these men ought to be an inspiration to all.
