“Culture Wars” is Volume 5 of The Black Book of the American Left, David Horowitz’s encyclopedic survey of the left’s agendas and the strategies it uses to achieve them. In this volume, Horowitz shows how today’s left uses culture as a battleground the way the old communist left used the economy. “Culture,” as he says, “is the battleground where the war for the American future is being fought.” The assault on popular culture began in the 1960s. Since then, the left has used its dominance in the culture to reshape American social and political institutions and, indeed, the national sensibility to advance “progressivism.” The triumph of “political correctness,” which Horowitz shows how it is merely an updated version of the communist “party line,” is the most obvious result of this assault. “Culture Wars” analyzes in detail the other ways in which the left has prosecuted its culture war—by pushing multiculturalism (a direct assault on the principle of e pluribus unum); by rewriting American history, at the high school and college level, to transform it into a narrative of violence and victimhood; by conquering and controlling the mainstream media; and by making “identitypolitics” and “gender” into weapons of cultural aggression.
