Now And Then: Knowing Luang Prabang- A Short History
Luang Prabang became a prominent place riding on its identity as the capital of the very first kingdom of Lao (Lan Xang; the land of a million elephants). Its prominence grew as from the year 1353, onwards. The city of Luang Prabang owes its name to Pha Bang, one of the most revered Buddha images that was brought to the city by the king Visoun in the early 1500s.
There was fragmentation of the Lao kingdom at the climax of the 16th century, a phenomenon that saw Luang Prabang morph into a militarily mild, independent city state that supplemented its existence by paying tribute to the surrounding kingdoms. Ultimately, to have a better assurance of survival, Luang Prabang accepted French protection, a phenomenon that resulted in the multiple colonial-style villas that sit alongside the more traditional architecture.
The latter half of the 20th century saw the city fall into decline, following the mostly reluctant withdrawal of the French. This was followed up by the 1975 revolution, an event that saw the Luang Prabang monarchy fold up. It is the relative bareness and poverty of this freshly independent Laos that perhaps helped shield Luang Prabang from the far-reaching ravages of 20th century metropolis planning.
