Harmonic pollution in electricity is one of the major problems under power quality issues. Harmonics are generated when electricity is controlled by electronics. The modern electronic devices and circuits are mostly non-linear. The examples of non-linear loads are computers, printers, Switched Mode Power Supplies (SMPS), Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPS), Invertors, AC/DC Drives, Induction furnaces etc. There has been tremendous rise in non-linear loads over last two decades. These non-linear loads generate harmonic distortion. The detrimental effects of harmonic distortion are overheating, fire hazards, equipment failure, incorrect recording by meters, false operation of protection systems etc. Therefore, the harmonic distortion has become a matter of serious concern for utility and customers both. It is therefore necessary to have an awareness in respect of a harmonic problem. Therefore, it has become essential for us to understand the basic concept of harmonics.
