Firemouth Cichlid Care: The Complete Guide to Caring for and Keeping Firemouth Cichlids as Pet Fish
The Firemouth cichlid (scientifically known as Thorichthys Meeki) is a species of cichlid fish that is native to Central America. They can commonly be found in the freshwater rivers of Mexico, south Belize and northern Guatemala. Their natural habitat is normally shallow and slow moving rivers and it is also not uncommon for them to live in turbid underground cave systems. The name ‘Firemouth’ is derived from the species bright orange and red coloration on their jaw. The species tends to flare out their gills, which exposes their fiery red throats, as a self-defense mechanism and to ward off rival males from their territory. Interestingly Firemouths form monogamous pairings. Firemouths tend to be peaceful fish unless they feel threatened.
