Chapter 1
Comprehension
"Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.
Teach him how to fish and he will eat for a lifetime."
Chinese Proverb
In Keys to Success: How to Achieve your Goals, by Carter, Bishop and Kravits, the authors write:
“Education is more than the process of going to school and earning a degree or certificate.
It is a choice to improve your mind and your skills.
Education is what you make of it.
If you make the most of your mind, your time, and your educational opportunities, you will realize your potential.”
Education is a process of gathering information to prepare you for life after school.
You not only learn facts while studying, but also how to think -- ability that will always be useful.
Education will always enhance your quality of life.
So take your life as a student seriously.
Comprehension is the key
1. Taking Notes
Note-taking in class is a skill which can be learned and refined.
Many high school and university students do not know how to take good notes.
A successful student will be able to learn to take good notes.
2. Taking Lecture Notes
Survey, Question and Listen (SQL):
Every student should always take accurate and concise lecture notes.
Carry a notebook to the lecture hall with you.
You should make it a habit to take notes using methods such as surveying, questioning and listening.
When you listen to a lecture, think of questions which you wish to ask or clarify while listening.
A good listener always knows how to focus and concentrate on the main points of the lecture.
Write these main points down in your notebook and then later reorganize them in your own words.
After you have done this, you have set the stage for successful reviewing and revising.
3. Where to Keep Notes
You must always write your notes logically and legibly.
If you can't read your own writing a few days after taking notes, those notes are of little use.
The best place to keep notes is still in a loose-leaf notebook.
You should try to make it a habit of using your notebook to write all your notes.
If you are caught without your notebook and need to take notes, always keep a supply of loose-leaf paper with you.
Remember to insert your note papers into the notebook as soon as you can.
You should make sure to buy a good notebook as you are going to use it frequently so it will probably get a lot of wear and tear.
4. Reading Text Books
The efficient student does not underline.
It is better to use a highlighter.
Always read the table of contents of your textbooks carefully.
If the textbooks have chapter summaries, better still - read these summaries first.
If you cannot understand the material from the chapter summaries, go back and highlight.
Write notes on what you have highlighted and review your notes.
You can break any study material into smaller sections depending on the difficulty of the study material.
Always note that concise notes are more useful and easier to remember than copious notes.
Think about the study material.
Then write notes on what you do not know in the study material or not sure of.
Thinking is one of the most important things you must do in class.
Think about what the teacher is saying before writing down anything.
Never write down each word.
That is really a waste of time.
Reorganize in your mind what the teacher is saying and then write it down.
This way you will be able to link the teacher's words with how you think.
If you are able to do this, your written notes will make a lot more sense later on.
Also always pay attention to the syllabus.
Very often important points and materials are mentioned in the syllabus.
