Ian Curtis, lead singer for Manchester band Joy Division, was a talented writer and musician prone to moodiness and bouts of depression. He wanted his music and to become popular and reach people. Curtis wrote powerful but serious lyrics that expressed his inner emotions. He mixed lyrics with a message other than anger and rebellion with a punk sound and was well received by Joy Division’s audiences. Many consider this to be the birth of post-punk.
