Japanese Women is the classic 1890 article from Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, which was written by Pierre Loti, a French colonialist who traveled widely in Asia and specialized in mocking things (and people) of the Orient.
Because Loti’s observations were at times revelatory, this snapshot of la femme japonaise is of historical significance.
