Joseph Stayton from Champaign County, IL, was the first permanent settler of the St. Joseph Township and is my 3rd great grandfather. This book provides history of the Stayton name and traces Joseph's family back to John Staton from England who moved his family to Pennsylvania in 1666. Then, it traces Joseph's family forward to me, Charles L. Stayton. Joseph was born in Mason County, KY, around 1798. His parents were Joseph and Martha (Glover) Stayton who moved from Sussex County, Delaware, to Mason County, KY, around 1793. Joseph Stayton moved his family from Mason County to Vermilion County, IL. Oct. 30, 1830. This section of Vermilion County 3 years later became Champaign County. Joseph had 14 children, 9 by his first wife Anna Beard and 5 by his second wife Elizabeth Strong, my 3rd great grandmother. I have included information about all his children and their families and those who married into the Stayton family. I then trace Joseph to me through his son Robert James Stayton who is my 2nd great grandfather. Considerable information is given for certain families that have ties to the Stayton family, including Strong, Meade and Babb. There is also good information on Robert James Stayton's siblings. I also give detail concerning my own immediate family, including my father, mother, stepmother and brother to the year 2014. Some families that are discussed include Strong, Burris, Laird, Peters, McCullam, Fry, White, Yeazel, Snider, Freeman, McElwee, Nonnenmacher, Hixenbaugh, Esworthy, Sallee, Meade, Babb and Reed.
