While female serial killers are not as common as their male counterparts, their killing sprees are often more successful. Female serial killers normally go on murdering for twice as long as males, leaving them plenty of time to rack up a notable body count. It wasn't until the 1970's that it became common for females to actually be convicted of murder. Perhaps this is why woman like Belle Gunness were allowed to get away with their crimes for so long. Our minds simply cannot grasp the fact that the female, someone who is supposed to be loving and nurturing by nature, could really commit cold-blooded murder.
