In India, economic growth has increased the demand for better health care and medical facilities and proper management of biomedical waste and its safe disposal. The concepts of medical tourism, is gaining importance, where hospitals of specialized nature will sooner or later come to light.

The Government in order to resolve the issue of biomedical waste had notified Biomedical Waste (Management and handing) Rules, 1998 under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. These rules apply to all persons who generate, collect, receive, store, transport, treat, dispose, or handle biomedical waste in any form.
