Lombard street: a description of the money market

I venture to call this essay 'Lombard Street' and not the 'Money Market,' or any such phrase, because I wish to deal, and to show that I mean to deal, with concrete realities in my explanation of how money moves and flows around cities. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
