Mary-Anne tells the story of a young woman who lives in the year 1894.After her father is
accidently killed,Mary-Anne and her mother find it difficult to manage their small farm.
One day,she see an advertisement for a governess posted on the tack board of the local
post-office.
Secretly replying, the young woman offers her own services as governess to a special-needs child. Not hesitating,
Mary-Anne also includes her mother to be housekeeper. For,after all,how can she leave poor mamma now;especially
with her mother still grieving for pappa?Besides,it will surely be much more than mamma makes cleaning for the Ramses?
A telegram arrives, and Mary-Anne knows it is the answer to their prayers. It can only mean one thing:they have been accepted
to work at the "Grand House",a mysterious dwelling purported to be haunted.
Mary-Anne has always scoffed at that idea;the villagers are a silly and superstitious lot after all.
Surely mamma will be delighted and know it is the right thing to do?But doubts cast a shadow over Mary-Anne's excitement,
for her mother can be stubborn as well as proud.
Dusk is falling rapidly now,and knowing the dangers of the forest at this time,Mary-Anne disregards the tales of
dangerous gypsies living there. The forest path is one she knows well, and besides,it will save a lot of time.
Plunging headlong into its depths,a strange encounter brings about a series of events;some of them far
beyond Mary-Anne's control.
