Born in Germany, Hannah Arendt (1906–75) was a German-American political theorist. Escaping the Nazis in 1941, she came to the U.S. and taught at prominent universities. In The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951), which recognized her as a major political thinker, Arendt traced Nazism and Communism to 19th century Imperialism and anti-Semitism. Additional works include The Human Condition (1958), Eichmann in Jerusalem (1963), and The Life of the Mind (1977).
