Walter Benjamin (1892–1940) was a German essayist and critic. His essays on Charles Baudelaire and Franz Kafka and his opinion on symbolism, allegory, and the function of art in a mechanical age have greatly affected modern criticism. When the Nazis invaded France, Benjamin, who had moved there in 1933, escaped to Spain. He was refused entry and committed suicide.
