When Geoffrey Mayne, a recently qualified young barrister, recovers from a serious case of pneumonia, his Aunt Emily prescribes a sea voyage as the surest means of regaining his health. But when the ship's oil tank explodes, Mayne finds himself stranded on a remote Pacific island with a small band of fellow castaways. Realising that rescue may be years away, the survivors determine to make a life for themselves in their paradisical new home. But when gunshots are heard in the wooded heart of the island, Geoffrey and his new associates are forced to confront the sinister prospect that they might not be alone on the island - and that their unwelcome companion may harbour hostile intentions...
