This is a fiction based on the time of early part of 20th century. It is a story of a young man Sridhar from Darbhanga, Bihar, India. He went to England to study Botany. After completion of his Master Degree, he came back to India. He started his journey by a ship named ‘Hindostan’ from the port of Liverpool. The ship touched the ports of Casablanca, Gibraltar, Malta, Suez, Aden, Bombay, Colombo, Madras and finally, reached Calcutta. During the voyage, Sridhar made acquaintance with some of the fellow passengers and enjoyed their companionship. A prominent one is Peter McMillan, who came to Calcutta to work in a Tea Company. He became a close friend of Sridhar. Sridhar helped Peter and took him to the Tea Company. Peter joined there in the Tea Company. Sridhar went to his hometown Darbhanga. He was on a scholarship of the princely state of Darbhanga. However, upon his return back from England, he was jobless and was looking out for jobs in line with his education. He met a respectable person in the name of Pandit Harihara Mishra on his way to Darbhanga. Pandit Mishra helped him to meet the Dewan Saheb of Darbhanga. Dewan Saheb of Darbhanga suggested him to join as Deputy Dewan of Kanchanpur. Kanchanpur is a small princely state lying in the midst of eastern India.
Kanchanpur is an imaginary name of a princely state of north Odisha bordering Jharkhand. This state is full of jungle and has less arable land, which is not a fortunate thing for a kingdom dependent primarily on agriculture for revenue.
During that time, Dewan Saheb of Kanchanpur was there at Darbhanga. Sridhar accepted the proposal and joined as Deputy Dewan of Kanchanpur. In his new work, Sridhar faced many challenges. But he managed to overcome those. He initiated a lot of development works in Kanchanpur and was able to improve the financial condition of Kanchanpur. This was helpful for the Kingdom to get away from the revenue burden imposed by British Raj. He continued to work there with commitment and energy. He got his lady love there too and his love for Kanchanpur increased from time to time.
