His father left George no choice – runaway from San Francisco to his home in Greenwich Village or live in San Francisco forever! You might think it would have been hard in 1953 for a ten year old boy to run away 3000 miles from California to New York, but that’s wrong. All you need are friends with a car driving in the right direction. If nothing else, George has plenty of friends.
The fact that the car was an old, beat Chevy that makes funny noises and the friends were kind of beat themselves, didn’t bother George. He had enough money so he could have taken a train or even an airplane home, but driving cross country with a writer and a madman (who’s a good driver) sounds like too much fun to pass up. If the car died, well, he’d figure out something.
One of George’s enduring talents was his ability to meet interesting people. On this trip, they range from a cowboy from Amarillo to a gangster from Chicago; from the daughter of a hipster artist in Denver to a rancher on the Colorado prairie; from a waitress in Reno who shares his yen for travel to a cop in Illinois who doesn’t arrest his hipster friends because they have George to watch over them.
His second major talent was the almost supernatural ability to tell a penguin joke for any occasion, whether the occasion was Thanksgiving dinner or the Cubs winning the World Series. On really special occasions, he’d tell a penguin limerick.
And it’s not just people and penguins: on his way, he meets Cookie the Elephant, sees the jets of Air Force Thunderbirds, listens to the roar of streamliners passing 10 feet away at 100 miles an hour and rides the Twentieth Century Limited into Grand Central.
