The Troubles in Northern Ireland
In 1969 we were amongst the first troops to deploy into the Province. This fictional book has used some actual events from those early days as it's basis. It covers not only some actual operations that we were involved in, but also encompasses the real life drama we were subjected to, including moments of laughter.
Additionally, it includes historical information about the Troubles, the main "Players", the mentality of the IRA, for example; the knee capping of individuals, the executions and to a lesser extent, the tar and feather punishments that they dished out.
In those days we did not have the luxury of remote controlled robots to go in close and relay live video while checking for booby traps, including any placed under executed victims left on the roadside. We would have to crawl up to the corpse and roll the body towards us using it as a shield in case a grenade was placed under it.
Only then could the body be recovered.
Such was life in Northern Ireland.
