Orientation Guide to Angola and the Portuguese-Angola Culture: Religion, Traditions, Family Life, Urban and Rural Populations, Geography, History, Economy, Society and Security (English Edition)

Por Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC)

    Sobre

Angola was colonized by the Portuguese, whose culture diffused throughout some parts of the country, particularly in the capital city of Luanda. Portuguese is Angola’s official language and is used in education, politics, official documents, and other functions of the Angolan ruling class. As a result, an estimated 60% of Angolans now use it as either their first or primary language. At the same time, members of the country’s ethnic groups also speak indigenous Bantu languages, including Kimbundu, Umbundu, and Kikongo.
People’s lives in Angola have been disrupted by almost continuous warfare. In the years since Portuguese colonial rule ended in Angola, conflict has ravaged the nation, propelled by Cold War factionalism and fighting over natural resources. Competition for control over the unregulated trade in “blood diamonds” led the United Nations (UN) to freeze financial accounts associated with gem trading. Although the last war formally ended in 2002, fighting continues to flare up in some parts of the country, especially oil-rich Cabinda. This has led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians, ongoing refugee problems, and chaotic conditions in the country.
This book, produced by Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC), provides comprehensive information about Angola and the Portuguese-Angola Culture. Chapter topics include religion, traditions, family life and differences in the lifestyles of urban and rural populations as well as detailed discussion of geography, history and their economy, form of government, society and security and much more.
