Perfect Pierogi Recipes : 50 Delicious of Pierogi Cookbooks (Pierogi Recipe, Perfect Pierogi Recipes, Pierogi Recipes, Pierogi Book, Pierogi Cookbooks) (Sharon Guzman Recipes Book Series No.11)

Pierogies are sconsidered to be national dishes in Poland, Ukraine and Slovakia. The shape of pierogies is often semicircular, but they are also made in the form of a triangle. The fillings depend on the wish of the chef. They can be filled with meat, vegetables, cheese, ham, fruits and so on. Pierogies are often served with toppings such as sugar, chocolate syrup, melted butter, sour cream, onion and so on.

Even though pierogies are considered to have a European origin, some people find it difficult to believe in it because of some other legends. Many people think that pierogies originally come from China or some other country from Easter Asia via Marco Polo in the time when he went on an expedition in Asia. Also some claim that pierogies are Italian because of their main ingredient – pasta. Another legend explains that pierogies were firstly introduced to the population of Poland through Saint Hyacinth of Poland who brought them from Kiev, Ukraine. During a visit of Koscielec by Saint Hyacinth all crops were damaged because of the storm. Hyacinth told everyone to pray and the next day new crops appeared.

In order to thank God for the new crops, the people there made pierogies from those crops. It is told that Saint Hyacinith fed the people with pierogies during the Tatar invasion. During the period of the Great Depression in the late 1920s, occurred the first onset of the Americans with pierogies. The first documented sale of pierogi was identified as early as May 1928 at the Marton House Tavern in Cleveland, where proprietor Andrew Marton served the food to unemployed steel mill workers in the Cleveland region.

Pierogies are usually stuffed with a filling, but it is not always the case. When stuffed, the fillings usually consist of potatoes, meat, fried onions, cheese, mushrooms, vegetables and so on.
