Preacher’s Kid is a collection of memoir-based stories. Each chapter is a complete story, yet all the stories relate as they trace the life of a preacher’s kid from the adventures of childhood, through coming-of-age challenges and into the more reflective years of adulthood; with stories of adventures in love, faith, education, nature, family and profession. In the final chapter the author returns to a childhood story which becomes a metaphor and summary of his philosophical views of faith and life. The stories are serious—yet humorous and nostalgic—as they relate to readers raised in conservative, religious homes. The author weaves into the stories many emotions and learned lessons. The stories lead from simple childhood adventures where the preacher’s kid learns about choosing friends and relationships, and the subsequent consequences; to the philosophical development of a personal worldview in maturity. With these stories the author tries to paint a realistic picture of life growing up as a preacher’s kid. The underlying theme in the stories is the psychological influence of growing up in a conservative faith as a preacher’s kid. “Life for a preacher’s kid is very much like living in a fish bowl...” In the later stories, as an adult, the author reflects on his worldview and the influence of his experiences as a preacher’s kid. “...now I realize that the view looking out of that bowl was often distorted. I saw the world completely through the lens of our conservative faith."
