William Harrison Ainsworth (4 February 1805 – 3 January 1882) was an English historical novelist born at King Street in Manchester. His first success as a writer came with Rookwood in 1834, which features Dick Turpin as its leading character. A stream of 39 novels followed, the last of which appeared in 1881.
This historical novel tells the story of the Jacobite uprising and the siege of Preston. This is a late novel by William Ainsworth. This can be considered as one of his Lancashire novels, which all together cover some 400 years of history. Historical fact and fiction are freely intermingled, which has led some historians to view him a little critically. The seige of Preston occured when a group of some 4,000 Jacobite rebels moved South into Lancashire in 1715. The government forces sent to meet them managed to surround them in the village of Preston. Despite government attacks being heavily repulsed, the rebels were forced to surrender, and many were transported to the Americas.
